The skull is carved from a single piece of Fimo clay. On the other pieces Jon forms a log of clay made up of all the different colors that make up each tile design. The log once assembled is cut into thin slices and the slices are applied to the body of the animal. To build the skull, Jon used the entire log. He then assembled the logs into a solid block of clay. Once the block was assembled, the block was carved into the shape of the skull. The clay logs were designed in such a way that as the piece was carved, the different tile designs were revealed. This gives you a 3 dimensional view an individual tile. On Jon's other pieces we only get to see the front of any given design. On the skull we get to all 3 sides and all the relationships between the logs.
